MGO?
🍯 What is MGO?
MGO stands for Methylglyoxal, a naturally occurring antibacterial compound found in high concentrations in Manuka honey. It’s the key to Manuka’s powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties—setting it apart from ordinary honey.

🔬 Where Does MGO Come From?
Manuka honey contains DHA (Dihydroxyacetone), a compound naturally present in the nectar of the Manuka flower.
Over time, DHA converts into MGO as the honey matures—
so the more mature the honey, the higher its MGO levels and therapeutic potency.
📏 What Do the MGO Numbers Mean?
The MGO number refers to the amount of Methylglyoxal in milligrams per kilogram of honey.
MGO LevelMGO Content (mg/kg)Typical Use
MGO 100+100 mg/kgDaily wellness
MGO 250+250 mg/kgImmune & throat support
MGO 550+550 mg/kg and aboveHigh-grade, therapeutic use
The higher the number, the stronger the antibacterial activity.
🛡 Why Does It Matter?
✔ Stronger MGO = Greater antimicrobial power
✔ Used in wound healing, oral care, digestion, and immunity
✔ In New Zealand, MGO levels are part of official quality certifications
